England’s World Cup Victory Marred by Injury to Henderson
England’s thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup’s last-16 round ended on a sour note as midfielder Jordan Henderson was taken to the hospital with a serious wrist injury.
The incident occurred right after the game when the 36-year-old celebrated with fans at the Azteca Stadium. Henderson reportedly stumbled and fell against advertising boards while singing Oasis’ “Wonderwall,” causing him to land awkwardly. Footage showed the midfielder being carried off on a stretcher, raising concerns among teammates and fans alike.
After the match, England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, confirmed the injury. “He injured his wrist and is currently in the hospital. It looks quite serious,” he stated. Tuchel expressed his disappointment, saying, “It just doesn’t fit with the evening that Jordan is not with us.”
Defender Dan Burn explained that Henderson fell while the players were celebrating with supporters. This unfortunate event overshadowed what was one of England’s most exciting victories in recent World Cup history. Despite facing significant challenges, including playing with only ten men, England prevailed and secured a spot in the quarter-finals.
Jude Bellingham scored two quick goals, putting England ahead before Julian Quinones managed to reduce the deficit for Mexico. A VAR review led to Jarell Quansah being sent off early in the second half, intensifying the pressure on the English squad. Harry Kane later converted a penalty to extend the lead, but Raul Jimenez brought Mexico back into contention with another spot-kick. In the end, England held their ground, clinching a memorable win.
Although Henderson remained on the bench throughout the match, he picked up a yellow card in the final minutes and made history as the first England men’s player to compete in four FIFA World Cups when he appeared in the earlier group-stage match against Panama.
Henderson will stay in Mexico City with a member of the support staff as the rest of the team heads back to their training camp in Kansas City, Missouri. England faces further challenges, with Quansah suspended for the upcoming quarter-final against Norway and Reece James also dealing with a hamstring injury. The team will keep a close eye on Henderson’s recovery as they prepare for their next match.
