Oregon Leads Christmas Tree Production in the U.S.

Oregon is a champion when it comes to Christmas tree production in the United States. The state grows about 4 million Christmas trees each year, making up roughly one-third of the country’s total supply. According to World Population Review, this industrious effort contributes around $120 million to the state’s economy annually.

Among the prominent producers in Oregon is the Holiday Tree Farms, a business that has been growing Christmas trees since 1955. The farm covers 8,500 acres and harvests about 1 million trees each year. They employ around 600 people during the busy harvest season at their 12 processing yards.

Holiday Tree Farms not only caters to Oregon residents but also ships trees far and wide, including to other states and countries like Mexico, Central America, and Asia. The most sought-after tree from this farm is the Douglas fir, along with other varieties like Grand fir, Noble fir, and Nordmann fir.

Overall, the U.S. sells between 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees each year, with about 350 million growing across the nation. The process of cultivating these trees takes years; for a standard six to seven-foot tree, it may take around seven to 15 years to grow. Each spring, farmers replace every tree harvested in the fall with one to three new seedlings.

North Carolina closely follows Oregon in Christmas tree production, contributing approximately 4 million trees annually and generating about $86 million in revenue. As the demand for real Christmas trees continues, the tradition remains strong, bringing the joy of the holiday season to homes and businesses across the nation.
