Women’s T20 World Cup: Former India Coach WV Raman Calls for Improvement in Powerplay Bowling

WV Raman Highlights India’s Strengths and Areas of Concern Ahead of Women’s T20 World Cup

Former India head coach WV Raman believes that India’s cricket team is well-equipped to compete in the Women’s T20 World Cup, thanks to their strong batting lineup and effective spin bowlers. However, he did raise some worries about the team’s performance during the powerplay, suggesting a need for bowlers who can consistently perform well with the new ball.

In recent matches, specifically against Pakistan, India allowed 52 runs in the powerplay, marking Pakistan’s highest score in this phase against India in Women’s T20 matches. Even against the Netherlands, Indian bowlers seemed to struggle initially. Thankfully, players like Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma stepped up during the middle overs, helping India regain control of the game.

“I believe this team is quite strong, especially in batting, and they have valuable experience in spin bowling. They definitely have what it takes to win the T20 World Cup,” Raman shared in an interview.

He continued to express concerns over the team’s ability to take wickets in the powerplay and pointed out the importance of establishing a reliable fast bowling combination, particularly for the opening and closing overs.

Harmanpreet’s Growth

Raman also commended the captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, for her development as a more patient and composed player. He noted her evolution from someone who would get easily frustrated to a more mature cricketer. “Harman has become much more patient over the years. Experience plays a vital role in helping players mature,” he said.

Currently, India is leading Group A with four points and a net run rate of +3.975. Their next match is against South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, on June 21 at Old Trafford in Manchester. Following that, they will face Bangladesh led by Nigar Sultana Joty and wrap up the group stage with a game against Australia, captained by Sophie Molineux.
