Ozempic earlobes add to the rising tide of cosmetic issues linked to GLP-1 medications

As the use of GLP-1 medications, like Ozempic, becomes more popular, a range of cosmetic concerns related to weight loss has surfaced. Many patients are expressing desires for cosmetic procedures due to changes in their appearance after taking these drugs.

Surgeons are noting an increasing number of requests for treatment of “Ozempic earlobes,” a term used for earlobes that may appear thinner or longer after losing facial fat. Dr. Sachin S. Parikh, a facial plastic surgeon, explained that semaglutides lead to fat loss throughout the body, including the earlobes, but reassured that this change does not harm ear tissue or affect hearing. Procedures like dermal fillers, fat transfers, and even surgical earlobe reductions have been suggested for those seeking cosmetic fixes.

Dr. Mohammed Asif from Duly Health and Care in Illinois noted that while he hasn’t seen a significant rise in ear surgeries, more patients are opting for other cosmetic adjustments after experiencing weight loss. Many are undergoing tummy tucks and skin removal surgeries to address the excess skin left after substantial weight reductions.

Asif observed a substantial increase in body contouring procedures among patients who have shed weight using these medications. He mentioned that recovery from these cosmetic surgeries tends to be easier compared to traditional bariatric surgeries.

Another concern that has emerged is “Ozempic breast,” where women may need breast lifts due to rapid weight loss affecting their breast volume. Dr. Michael Omidi, another plastic surgeon, explained that such quick weight loss can make breasts appear saggy because the skin doesn’t always tighten fast enough to keep up with the loss.

Dr. Samuel Golpanian from Beverly Hills noted an increase in patients seeking help for “Ozempic butt,” where the rapid loss of fat results in a flatter appearance. The skin may not tighten quickly enough to keep up with the body’s changes after significant weight loss.

Dr. Kristy Hamilton, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, mentioned that she is seeing more patients looking for skin-tightening procedures. She highlighted that many people are shedding as much as 100 pounds, leading to noticeable excess skin.

To address these issues, several popular body-contouring procedures have emerged. These include tummy tucks, lower body lifts, arm lifts, thigh lifts, and breast lifts, all aimed at addressing the changes that take place after significant weight loss.

Experts recommend ensuring adequate protein intake and engaging in strength training to help preserve muscle mass during weight loss. Dr. Golpanian emphasized the importance of consuming enough protein, advising patients to aim for at least 110 grams daily, even though appetite may be suppressed during treatment. He also stressed the value of weightlifting to maintain muscle tone.

Overall, as GLP-1 medications continue to gain traction, understanding and addressing the cosmetic impacts of weight loss will likely remain important for patients seeking to enhance their body image and self-esteem.
