Pope Issues Vatican Encyclical Cautioning About the Dangers of AI to Human Dignity

Pope Leo Warns About the Risks of Artificial Intelligence

Pope Leo XIV recently introduced a new document called “Magnifica Humanitas,” highlighting the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). He expressed concerns that AI could lead to “domination, exclusion, and death” unless there are proper moral guidelines set by governments and organizations.

This marks the Vatican’s entrance into the global conversation on AI, as technology companies and governments race to develop advanced AI systems amid minimal regulations.

Invoking Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical from 1891, which tackled worker exploitation during the Industrial Revolution, the Pope argued that AI poses a similar transformative challenge to human dignity today. “We are facing a change of great importance, perhaps even more consequential,” he stated.

Increasing Concerns about Autonomous Weapons

Pope Leo also raised alarms about the rise of autonomous weapon systems that could operate independently of human control. He cautioned that biased AI data could limit access to essential services like healthcare and jobs. He compared the need for AI regulation to the control of nuclear weapons, emphasizing that such technology should benefit everyone and the common good.

“Like nuclear energy, it must serve all of humanity,” he noted.

The Need for Trust and Human Dignity

The Pope stated that it’s not enough to simply aim for disarmament in AI. He urged a collaborative effort from governments and institutions to create systems based on trust and respect for human dignity. Reflecting on the devastating floods in Peru, he emphasized the importance of restoring trust and hope in rebuilding efforts.

Pope Leo also shared insights about humanity’s relationship with technology. “Each person possesses freedoms and a calling to love and worship that no machine can replicate,” he said.

As the Vatican seeks to infuse moral considerations into a rapidly changing technological landscape, the Pope called on humanity to remain vigilant and not to let machines dictate moral choices.
