At Least 82 Dead in Major Coal Mine Explosion in China
A devastating gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China has resulted in the deaths of at least 82 individuals, with over 120 others receiving medical treatment. The incident occurred late Friday evening at the Liushenyu coal mine, located in Qinyuan County, Shanxi province. Unfortunately, two people are still unaccounted for.
This tragedy marks one of the worst mining disasters in recent memory for the country. Following the explosion, local officials have initiated an investigation and reported significant safety violations by the mine’s operating company, Shanxi Tongzhou Coal & Coke Group.
The explosion prompted immediate safety inspections throughout China’s coal industry, affecting the supply of coking coal and causing prices to surge on Monday.
Witnesses described the scene inside the mine as chaotic, with thick smoke filling the tunnels, leading to many workers being trapped and suffocated. Some miners lost consciousness due to exposure to toxic gases.
Reports from state media revealed that the mine had been classified as prone to disasters due to its high gas levels as early as 2024. Furthermore, discrepancies between the mine’s blueprints and its actual layout complicated rescue efforts.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a comprehensive rescue operation for the missing workers and has ordered a detailed investigation to ensure accountability. Officials stated that those responsible for the disaster are being closely monitored.
China has seen several deadly mining accidents in recent years, despite promises from officials to improve safety standards. In 2023, an incident in Inner Mongolia claimed 53 lives, and in 2009, an explosion in Heilongjiang province resulted in 108 fatalities.
