Zelenskiy Discusses Slow Progress in Talks with the U.S. on Missile Defense
In a recent address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed his disappointment over the slow pace of discussions with the United States regarding the expansion of missile defense production. He mentioned that communication with American officials hasn’t yielded significant outcomes for quite some time.
Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine is now focusing on speeding up the development of its own missile defense systems within Europe. He highlighted the importance of producing these systems in sufficient quantities on the continent to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
During his speech, he acknowledged the ongoing conversations with the U.S. and underscored the vital role that U.S. leadership plays in supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts. He also extended his gratitude to French President Emmanuel Macron for France’s assistance in developing these defense systems, noting Europe’s crucial financial support in helping Ukraine acquire weapons.
“Europe has been a big help to us financially. However, we still rely heavily on the leadership from the United States,” he stated, stressing the importance of tangible results and new diplomatic initiatives from U.S. representatives.
The ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has seen U.S.-led diplomatic efforts stall, particularly with rising tensions in other regions, such as Iran. Zelenskiy indicated he is hopeful for new U.S. proposals to help advance the discussions and achieve a resolution to the prolonged conflict.
