New Delhi: CJI Surya Kant Clarifies Remarks Amid Controversy

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant recently addressed concerns regarding his comments that led to a satirical online movement called the “Cockroach Janta Party.” Following his remark, he took a moment to clarify his respect for the youth of India.

During a court session, lawyer N K Goswami requested immediate action against Abhijit Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party. Goswami accused Dipke of misrepresenting CJI Kant’s words and using social media to sensationalize the issue without considering the full context.

CJI Surya Kant, leading the bench, dismissed the urgency of the plea with a light-hearted response, saying, “Don’t take it so sentimentally.”

On May 16, the CJI described how he used the term “cockroach” to voice his frustrations regarding individuals who falsely claim to be lawyers, often without proper legal credentials. This statement sparked wider discussions about fake professionals across various sectors, including media.

The petition asserted that Dipke was selectively using the CJI’s remarks to create attention-grabbing content online. It pointed out that since the live streaming of court proceedings post-COVID-19, clips have often been transformed into sensationalized content, losing their original context and seriousness.

The PIL warned that such online activities can lead to “organized digital humiliation” of constitutional authorities and institutions, ultimately undermining their dignity and trust.

In his earlier remarks, CJI Surya Kant expressed disappointment over how media outlets misquoted him, asserting, “I only criticized individuals entering the legal profession using fake degrees. I have deep respect for the youth of India, who inspire me as the future leaders of our nation.”
