Pat Cummins Likely to Sign Big Contract Extension with Cricket Australia

Pat Cummins, the captain of the Australian cricket team, has been offered a significant contract extension by Cricket Australia. This new deal could boost his yearly earnings to nearly 4 million Australian dollars (around 22 crore rupees). The move comes as Cricket Australia seeks to compete with the financial strength of franchise cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to a report from The Age, the proposed contract could last until 2029 and total close to 12 million Australian dollars (approximately 66 crore rupees) over three years if he agrees. This extension would increase Cummins’ salary by about 1 million Australian dollars annually, coinciding with a busy international schedule that might have Australia playing 21 Tests in just 12 months.

Cummins, who also leads the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, was previously retained by the team for 18 crore rupees ahead of the current season. The report highlights that other Australian players, like Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, and Cameron Green, are expected to receive better deals as well.

Currently, the average annual salary for Australian male players is slightly over 1 million Australian dollars, not including match fees and superannuation. Cummins’ proposed contract is set to offer more guaranteed money, no matter how much cricket he plays. By the time this deal concludes in 2029, Cummins will be 36 years old.

Keeping Up with the IPL Competition

James Allsopp, Cricket Australia’s head of cricket, acknowledged the growing pressure from the franchise market, especially concerning players who excel in multiple formats. He emphasized the challenge of maintaining a balance while ensuring top players stay dedicated to Australian cricket.

“There’s a lot of demand for multi-format players like Pat and his teammates. Keeping them committed to Australian cricket is extremely important,” Allsopp stated. He also noted the need to reward players who attract audiences, as they now have the option to pursue lucrative deals outside of Australian cricket and its Big Bash League (BBL), which could affect the sport’s standing in Australia.

This potential contract extension for Cummins highlights the changing landscape of cricket, where balancing national and franchise commitments is increasingly complex.
