Bengaluru Loses IPL Final Hosting Rights Amid Controversy

DK Shivakumar has responded to rumors that Bengaluru will not host this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) final, which has raised questions about the reasons behind this decision. The city has also lost the right to host all playoff matches, breaking the IPL tradition where the defending champions typically host the final.

Reports have emerged suggesting that the venue change was influenced by political issues in the city, particularly regarding ticket distribution for MLAs. However, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stated that no official explanation was provided for the decision.

Shivakumar remarked, “The final’s relocation seems to be based on the capacity of the big stadium in Ahmedabad to accommodate more fans. The ticket situation for MLAs had nothing to do with this change. 50% of tickets will be reserved for other purposes,” as reported by ANI.

Typically, the IPL final is hosted by the reigning champions. Last year, the final was moved from Eden Gardens due to concerns over weather and other logistical challenges stemming from the India-Pakistan border tensions.

The KSCA expressed its disappointment after learning that Bengaluru would miss the chance to host the IPL 2026 playoffs and final, despite initially being selected. “KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad was in contact with the BCCI and communicated our eagerness to host the playoffs at the renowned M. Chinnaswamy Stadium,” the association stated.

The association also noted that this season’s IPL matches in Bengaluru were well-received, highlighting smooth operations, effective crowd management, and an overall enjoyable experience for spectators, which showcased their capability to host significant events.

As a result of this shift, the Narendra Modi Stadium will host the IPL final for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
