India Edges Out Pakistan in Thrilling FIH Pro League Opener

Excitement filled the air at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre as India narrowly defeated Pakistan 4-3 in a nail-biting start to the FIH Pro League in London. This match marked the first encounter between the two fierce rivals on the international stage in nearly two years, showcasing the intense spirit of their historic rivalry.

With this win, India has extended its unbeaten streak against Pakistan, now spanning over a decade—an impressive 3784 days and 18 matches without a loss.

Match Highlights:

Pakistan’s loss leaves them at the bottom of the league table, struggling with 13 defeats in as many games this season, while India climbed to the 7th position, securing their third victory out of 13 matches.

The stats highlighted India’s overwhelming control in the game, achieving 30 circle penetrations compared to Pakistan’s nine. However, it was Pakistan that struck first, surprising everyone when Ahmad Nadeem found an opening to score in the first quarter.

Despite the early setback, India’s efforts were relentless. Dilpreet Singh had a great chance to equalize, but Pakistan’s young goalkeeper, Ali Raza, made a fantastic save. India eventually leveled the score in the 23rd minute when Dilpreet set up Abhishek, who confidently sent the ball into the net.

The momentum swung further in India’s favor just a minute later. A penalty corner routine resulted in a scramble, and Nilakanta Sharma quickly capitalized on a loose ball to score his 19th international goal.

Late Charge from Pakistan

After halftime, India continued to press on and scored a stunning third goal, with Sukhjeet Singh executing a brilliant shot after turning his defender. They added a fourth goal from a clever penalty corner taken by Rajinder Singh, which found the back of the net amid chaotic defending from Pakistan.

As the game neared its end, Pakistan rallied back with two late goals from Abu Bakar and Gazanfar Shakeel, but it was too little, too late, as India held on for a narrow victory.

Although the win was a source of relief for the Indian team, it highlighted some defensive issues they will need to address as they prepare for their next match against England on June 25. Meanwhile, Pakistan will look to regroup quickly for their match against England on Wednesday.

The two teams will face off again in London for the second leg on Friday.
