E-Commerce Fraud Networks on the Rise: Study Reveals Alarming Trends
Recent research highlights a concerning trend in the world of online shopping, as organized fraud networks increasingly target e-commerce platforms. This misuse has become more structured and automated, leveraging cashback offers, referral incentives, return policies, and cash-on-delivery models in sophisticated ways.
The study, conducted by online risk management firm Bureau, analyzed 70 million e-commerce users over a span of ten days. Their findings are troubling: they identified 256 clusters of fraudulent activity linked to around 45,000 accounts across approximately 9,000 devices. Notably, about 9,000 devices appeared to be associated with suspicious marketplace behavior.
Interestingly, the study noted that a small fraction—only 0.95% of users—accounted for a significant portion of the unusual activities observed. This suggests that a handful of accounts are driving the fraud, often through coordinated actions.
Device farms, where multiple devices operate together, emerged as a critical infrastructure for these fraud networks. Such setups can manage numerous accounts simultaneously, facilitating promotional and referral abuses. Users often create multiple fake accounts to exploit incentives while targeting accounts with stored payment information for potential financial fraud.
Behavioral anomalies were also flagged in the analysis. For instance, one account logged in from both Gujarat and Bengaluru within a mere 30 minutes, while another showed activity across 70 different locations—a pattern pointing to automated manipulation of accounts.
Ranjan Reddy, the CEO of Bureau, emphasized the scale of this issue, stating, “Promo abuse isn’t petty theft. It’s industrialised.” He noted that these fraudulent operations are crossing multiple platforms.
The report identified major areas of concern, highlighting that fraud activities were especially prominent in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Noida. In some cases, platforms recorded up to 15 times the expected number of users managing multiple accounts. Additionally, the issue of return abuse was brought to light, where fraudsters order high-value items only to return counterfeit products or empty packages.
Bureau’s extensive intelligence network monitors nearly 300 million devices daily, spanning over 100 enterprises in various sectors, including banking, fintech, e-commerce, insurance, and gaming. As the fight against these organized fraud rings continues, it becomes increasingly important for businesses and consumers alike to remain vigilant and informed about these evolving threats.
