Nishan Velupillay Shines in FIFA World Cup Debut as Australia Upsets Turkiye

Indian-origin footballer Nishan Velupillay made an exciting debut in the FIFA World Cup on June 14, as Australia surprised many by defeating Turkiye 2-0 in their opening group-stage match. This victory puts Australia in a strong position for advancing in the tournament.

Nishan, whose mother is Anglo-Indian, entered the game in the 61st minute and played a key defensive role in maintaining Australia’s lead against a formidable Turkiye team. At just 25 years old, Nishan is seen as a bright star in Australian football, though he didn’t get many chances to showcase his attacking skills this time.

Highlights of Australia vs Turkiye

Nishan made his professional debut for Australia in 2024, after developing his skills at local clubs and the Melbourne Victory academy. He first stepped onto the international stage during a World Cup qualifier against China, where he scored shortly after coming on, helping Australia secure a 3-1 victory.

Since then, he has earned eight caps for his country and scored three goals, all in World Cup qualifying matches. His impressive performances led coach Tony Popovic to include him in Australia’s final squad for the World Cup. Nishan’s participation on Sunday marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Indian-origin player to feature in the tournament’s 2026 edition.

A Memorable Match

In their much-anticipated match, Australia disrupted Turkiye’s return to the World Cup after 24 years. The Australian team was quick on their feet, with Nestory Irankunda scoring the first goal with a stunning shot during a counter-attack in the first half. Connor Metcalfe sealed the victory by scoring the second goal in the 75th minute.

The first goal came when Irankunda expertly controlled a long pass, outmaneuvered a defender, and slotted the ball into the net. Australia’s solid defense held strong against Turkiye’s efforts, leading to Metcalfe’s goal from about 20 yards out, ensuring a comfortable lead.

When Velupillay came on for Irankunda in the second half, he was instructed to focus primarily on defense, helping Australia to secure the win.

As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on Nishan and the Australian team as they aim for further success in the World Cup.
