Ricky Ponting’s Frustration Turns to Support in Punjab Kings’ Victory

In an intense match on April 19 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Ricky Ponting expressed his anger over Shashank Singh’s fielding mistakes during Punjab Kings’ 54-run win against Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2026.

Shashank had a tough outing, dropping two critical catches and making various errors on the field. Ponting’s frustration was evident as he reacted from the dugout, clearly disappointed with the performance.

However, after the match ended with a solid win for Punjab, the atmosphere shifted completely. Ponting was seen embracing Shashank in a moment of support, reflecting the team spirit amid earlier tensions.

With this victory, Punjab Kings strengthened their position at the top of the points table, remaining unbeaten with five wins out of six matches, earning 11 points and a strong net run rate of +1.420.

Shashank Singh’s Challenging Day

Shashank Singh faced a challenging day in the field that overshadowed an otherwise strong performance by his team. The troubles began when he dropped a seemingly straightforward catch from Nicholas Pooran, misreading the ball and only managing to touch it as it fell to the ground.

His difficulties continued in the 18th over when he let a catchable ball slip past him during Aiden Markram’s innings, leading to further frustration for Ponting. The moment highlighted Shashank’s struggles as he seemed out of sync with the play.

The situation worsened in the penultimate over when he dropped a catch from Mukul Choudhary. Despite getting both hands to it, Shashank could not secure the catch. While captain Shreyas Iyer appeared unfazed, it was clear Ponting was concerned about these mistakes. It was a performance Shashank would likely want to forget quickly, even with the team’s overall success.

On a brighter note, Shashank did contribute with a quick 17 runs off just six balls, including one four and a six, helping Punjab Kings surpass the 250-run mark. In turn, they restricted the Super Giants to 200 for five, showcasing their continued dominance in this year’s tournament.
