IND vs ENG | T20 World Cup: Can Varun Chakravarthy’s Spin Strategy Stand the Test?

Varun Chakravarthy Faces Challenges Ahead of Big Match Against England

After India’s game against the Netherlands, former cricketer Kris Srikkanth praised Varun Chakravarthy, labeling him a modern T20I great. In a bold statement, he even suggested that Varun was more effective than Jasprit Bumrah in the shorter format. Following the match, Varun’s impressive stats stood out, as he had taken three wickets for only 14 runs, outperforming Bumrah.

Since his comeback to the Indian T20I team in October 2024, Varun has been a standout performer, claiming 69 wickets in 37 matches. His average is an impressive 14.17, and he has maintained an economy rate just above seven.

However, as the Super 8 phase began, Varun’s form showed signs of struggle. Against South Africa, he conceded 47 runs in four overs, and though he did slightly better against Zimbabwe, the challenge continued. In Chennai, he managed to take one wicket but still gave away 35 runs.

In his latest game in Kolkata, Varun initially dismissed Shai Hope, but later faced difficulties, leaking 40 runs in four overs. His dwindling performance has raised concerns, especially with the crucial match against England looming.

What’s Going Wrong?

Varun’s success upon returning to the team was largely attributed to his effective leg-spin and the unique googly he bowled. Initially, he utilized a traditional seam position which worked well for him. His coach, Prathiban, noted how they had focused on improving his leg-spin and making his googly more deceptive.

However, Varun seems to have strayed from his strengths, as former cricketer Mohammed Kaif observed. He mentioned that Varun has bowled less leg-spin lately, and batters are now anticipating his googly, which makes it easier for them to score runs.

Additionally, players have adapted by using the “step-hit” technique against him, striking directly without much foot movement. This approach has proven effective, as seen with David Miller and Dewald Brevis during their match in Ahmedabad.

Moreover, Varun tends to show signs of panic when runs are being scored against him. Observers have noted that he starts to deviate from his natural bowling style, becoming less consistent.

Looking Ahead to the England Match

As India prepares to face England in Mumbai, discussions about the bowling lineup have emerged. While some suggest replacing Varun with Kuldeep Yadav, bowling expert Laxmipathy Balaji has backed Varun to retain his spot. He emphasized the need for experience and considers Varun an essential player despite his recent struggles.

Historically, Varun has fared well against England, boasting 14 wickets in just five matches at an impressive average. Though the Wankhede Stadium presents a challenge for spinners due to its short boundaries, Varun has shown impressive performance at the venue during the IPL.

Before the match, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has spent time with Varun, encouraging him to have faith in his skills. He reminded Varun not to overthink his strategy, focusing instead on his strengths.

As India gears up for the match on March 5, Varun will be crucial to the team’s success. With a supportive strategy and a return to what has worked for him in the past, he has the potential to bounce back and shine once again.
