Trump Honors Lifeguard Who Rescued Indian-American Boy
Washington, D.C. – On Monday, President Donald Trump took time to recognize a heroic act by a 16-year-old lifeguard, Ryder Williams, who rescued a 10-year-old Indian-American boy, Nathaniel Rai, from dangerous waves at a beach in California last month.
During a special meeting at the Oval Office, Trump welcomed Williams and his family alongside Nathaniel, his sister Layla, and their father Sumit Rai. The President praised Nathaniel for his bravery, saying, “I want to congratulate Nathaniel Rai for coming through an ordeal. That means you are going to have good luck in life.”
In a lighthearted moment, Trump joked with Nathaniel, saying, “You are very lucky I was not on service that day,” before shifting his praise to Williams for his courageous actions.
The rescue took place on July 25 at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California, where Williams spotted Nathaniel struggling against the powerful surf. “He’s a real hero,” Trump said, while Williams sat next to him, beaming with pride.
Joining them were Williams’ parents, Shane and Shannon, as well as fellow lifeguard Aaron Bonin, who helped with the rescue. The dramatic incident was caught on camera and soon went viral, drawing attention from Trump, who later invited the lifeguard’s family to the White House.
“It’s an amazing thing. And he is a real lucky guy, too. God was watching you,” Trump remarked, affirming Nathaniel’s fortune.
Reflecting on the rescue, Williams explained that he saw Nathaniel lose his footing in the water and rushed to help. “In those dangerous moments, we always try to rely on our training. We are trained so well by many to handle that situation as best we can,” he said, emphasizing his focus on getting Nathaniel out quickly.
Sumit Rai expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the lifeguards who saved his son’s life. During their visit, Trump also mentioned that the family would have the opportunity to tour significant areas of the White House, including President Abraham Lincoln’s bedroom and the Cabinet Room where he signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
This uplifting story of bravery and community support highlights the impact of quick thinking in emergency situations and the importance of lifeguards in keeping our beaches safe.
