Score Summary: India leads Sri Lanka by 178 runs at stumps on Day 3 of the first Test in Galle, with scores of India (462) and Sri Lanka (284 in 79.4 overs).

On Day 3 of the Test match in Galle, India witnessed an impressive batting performance from Sri Lanka’s Sonal Dinusha, who scored his first Test century and threw a wrench in India’s hopes of enforcing the follow-on. Despite this effort, India’s spinners, led by Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja, ensured Sri Lanka was bowled out for 284, giving India a strong first-innings lead of 178 runs before rain halted the game early.

Day Highlights:

Suthar recorded bowling figures of 4 for 76, while Jadeja contributed with 3 for 57, showcasing the dominance of India’s spin attack for much of the day. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with a wicket each as Sri Lanka’s innings ended after a vigorous fight from Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella.

At one point, Sri Lanka was in deep trouble at 90 for 5, but Dinusha and Dickwella’s partnership turned the game around. They built a resilient 146-run sixth-wicket partnership that significantly shifted the momentum, using clever batting techniques against the spinners.

Dinusha reached his century with a well-played 100 runs off 168 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes. In just his fourth Test, he showed great composure and played a vital role in preventing Sri Lanka from falling behind. Meanwhile, Dickwella contributed a solid 80 runs off 115 balls but unfortunately missed out on his own century, continuing a streak of half-centuries without a hundred.

As the day went on, the weather mostly held up, allowing India to press hard against the Sri Lankan batting. However, late rain caused an early conclusion to the day’s play, resulting in 13 lost overs.

Suthar Shines in India’s Spin Attack

The Indian bowling attack started strong, with Mohammed Siraj claiming an early wicket. However, it was Suthar who became the standout bowler, troubling Sri Lankan batsmen with his precise deliveries. In a well-rounded spin strategy, Kuldeep Yadav and Jadeja supported him effectively, leaving Sri Lanka struggling.

Just as it seemed that India could enforce the follow-on, Dinusha and Dickwella’s partnership revived Sri Lanka’s innings. They were aggressive, using sweeps to take control of the game, which forced India to rethink their field placements.

Turning Point: The Notable Partnership

Both Dinusha and Dickwella were proactive against India’s spinners, employing aggressive shots that troubled the Indian side. The two batters reached notable milestones in this innings, with Dinusha reaching his second half-century and Dickwella marking his 23rd fifty.

India attempted to break this partnership through reviews, but luck didn’t favor them as crucial decisions went against their appeals. By the time tea was taken, Sri Lanka had moved to 214 for 5, with both key players still at the crease.

As the session progressed, Krishna managed to dismiss Dickwella with a fine delivery, but Dinusha continued to resist until Jadeja finally removed him for his well-made century. Suthar wrapped up the Sri Lankan innings soon after, leading to a total of 284 runs.

A Rainy Conclusion to Day 3

With India holding a substantial lead of 178 runs, the weather added an element of uncertainty. Just as India looked to build on their advantage, the skies darkened and rain interrupted play. Umpires called stumps early, leaving an exciting but tense atmosphere heading into Day 4.

As they prepare for the next day, India must focus on maintaining their strong position while hoping for clear weather to secure a win in this rain-affected Test match.
