Indian Tech Founders Outshine Returning NRIs, Says ORF Study

Local Founders Outperforming Diaspora Tech Entrepreneurs in India

In recent years, the narrative around India’s startup scene has centered on successful Indian professionals returning from abroad to ignite the local market with their knowledge and resources. However, a new report from the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) challenges this view.

The research presents what it terms the “Indian Returnee Paradox.” Instead of returnees leading the charge, it notes that homegrown Indian entrepreneurs are increasingly excelling in creating sustainable and successful startups.

Homegrown Success

The ORF study analyzed 596 tech startups launched in India between 2016 and 2023. It shows that local founders have surpassed diaspora returnees in key performance areas such as revenue growth, company valuation, and survival rates.

Previously, international experience and connections were deemed vital for success in India’s tech landscape. Still, the ORF report indicates that local entrepreneurs are changing that game.

Understanding the Local Market

One significant finding from the report is that having a deep understanding of the Indian market is more beneficial than having worked abroad. Founders based in India can tailor their technologies to meet local challenges better than those who try to apply global strategies.

This understanding is crucial, as Indian businesses often face hurdles like complex regulations and diverse customer needs. Local founders are better positioned to develop solutions that cater specifically to these requirements.

Evolving Ecosystem

The ORF study highlights that India’s startup ecosystem has matured, reducing its reliance on overseas talent. Enhancements in local funding, digital infrastructure, and a skilled workforce have made it possible for domestic entrepreneurs to thrive without needing to rely on returning NRIs.

Government initiatives aimed at promoting self-reliance, especially in technology, further support this shift. Innovations that once required overseas expertise are now being successfully developed within India.

A Shift in Perspective

The report also underscores a philosophical change in the startup landscape. Entrepreneurs are now focusing on solving uniquely Indian issues rather than chasing global markets. This “India-first” approach is leading to better commercial outcomes and more enduring businesses.

While returning entrepreneurs still have their place, the idea that foreign experience guarantees success in India’s tech sector is increasingly outdated. The center of innovation is shifting, with local founders taking the lead in crafting solutions tailored for Indian needs.
