Telangana Leaders Push for NRI Commission
Hyderabad, Telangana: Dr. Addanki Dayakar, a Government Whip and Member of the Legislative Council, along with Hanumandla Jhansi Reddy, Vice President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), have called on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to establish a special Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Commission in Telangana. Their goal is to address the needs of Telanganites living abroad and to enhance their role in the development of the state.
Dr. Dayakar, who has the status of a State Minister, and Reddy, who oversees the Palakurthi Assembly Constituency, presented a formal request to the Chief Minister urging swift action on setting up the proposed commission.
The leaders highlighted that Telangana boasts a considerable and expanding diaspora, primarily located in countries like the United States, various Gulf nations, Europe, Canada, Australia, and beyond. These overseas Telanganites contribute significantly to the state through remittances, investments, business ventures, technology exchanges, charitable efforts, education, and healthcare.
However, the leaders pointed out that NRIs and their families often face challenges that require assistance from government agencies back home. Some common issues include property disputes, documentation problems, fraud, legal assistance, family emergencies, and coordination difficulties with government departments.
A Centralized Assistance System
According to their proposal, the NRI Commission could serve as a reliable link between the Telangana Government and its diaspora. This commission would operate as a “single-window” facility, allowing NRIs to express their concerns and request help without dealing with multiple departments separately.
The proposed commission would handle a range of tasks, such as resolving grievances, providing legal and property assistance, protecting NRI assets from fraud, and managing coordination during international emergencies. Regular communication with Telangana associations abroad would be established to ensure that the diaspora’s concerns reach the right authorities.
Beyond addressing grievances, the commission aims to involve the Telangana diaspora in the state’s development actively. A clear and transparent system could motivate NRI investments and enhance technology and knowledge transfers, as well as encourage participation in sectors like tourism, education, healthcare, and philanthropy.
Another key aspect of the proposal is to create a comprehensive database and communication network that connects Telanganites globally. This would enable continuous engagement with the overseas community rather than just focusing on individual issues or emergencies.
Strengthening Connections
The leaders also mentioned that an effective NRI Commission could coordinate with the Indian Government, embassies, and community organizations abroad when necessary. They proposed organizing regular NRI conferences to facilitate communication, allowing diaspora members to voice their concerns, share suggestions, and explore potential opportunities for contributing to Telangana’s growth.
Dr. Dayakar and Reddy noted that other Indian states already have mechanisms in place to engage with NRIs and expressed confidence that Telangana could develop a model tailored to the needs of its growing overseas community. They emphasized that a well-functioning NRI Commission could help the state leverage not just financial investments but also professional skills, technology advancements, job opportunities, and global partnerships.
The leaders are eager to collaborate with NRI representatives on designing the commission’s structure and its approach to resolving issues, appealing to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to consider their proposal positively. They believe that establishing this commission could safeguard the interests of Telangana’s NRIs while integrating them into the state’s ongoing development journey.
