Sanchez Pushes for Palestinian Statehood at UN Assembly
WASHINGTON: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, known for his strong stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza, urged the United Nations to recognize Palestine as a state during a recent conference in New York.
“This meeting is a significant step, but it is just the beginning,” Sanchez stated at the United Nations General Assembly. He emphasized the need for the State of Palestine to become a full member of the UN, calling for a swift completion of the recognition process on equal terms with other nations.
Sanchez highlighted that immediate action is necessary to end the violence and facilitate peace. The Spanish Prime Minister has been particularly vocal about Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which were launched following attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Spain is not alone in its support; countries like Ireland and Norway officially recognized Palestine as a state in May. Other nations, including the UK, Australia, Canada, and Portugal, have also acknowledged Palestinian statehood.
In response to Sanchez’s comments, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar recently labeled him as “antisemitic” and “dishonest,” sparking tensions that led to Spain summoning Israel’s ambassador in Madrid.
