Severe Heatwave Hits Iran, Causing Water and Power Shortages
TEHRAN: A harsh heatwave has gripped Iran, leading to significant disruptions in water and electricity services across the country. State media reported on Tuesday that reservoir levels have dropped to their lowest point in a century.
The extreme heat, which began last Friday, is forecasted to subside gradually by Thursday, as per the meteorological authorities mentioned by state television.
In response to the intense conditions, government offices in at least 15 of Iran’s 31 provinces, including the capital city of Tehran, will close on Wednesday. This decision aims to help conserve water and electricity resources.
Parts of southern and southwestern Iran have seen temperatures soar above 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit).
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani indicated that office closures might continue if deemed necessary, emphasizing the “critical situation” regarding water supplies in Tehran.
