Thunderstorms Bring Relief to Delhi-NCR’s Scorching Heat
On Sunday evening, Delhi-NCR experienced a powerful thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain and dust storms, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat. Recent weather reports from Safdarjung indicated that the maximum temperature reached 39.7°C, slightly below the average for this time of year but noticeably higher than the previous day’s temperature by 4.9°C. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature was recorded at 27.2°C, which shows an increase of 1.4°C from the day before.
This year marks a significant change in the city’s weather patterns, as May has seen the highest rainfall since records began in 1901. In fact, rainfall during May has almost tripled since 1951. It has climbed from an average of 17mm to an impressive 52.7mm over the last three decades, with the past five years alone reporting 95.7mm of rain.
Interestingly, the number of dry Mays has decreased significantly, while instances of heavy rainfall have surged. Despite the increase in rainfall, the average temperature has remained mostly stable around 39.7°C. Experts attribute this unusual weather shift to factors including more frequent thunderstorms, higher humidity levels, and the impacts of global warming. They warn that the growing humidity not only poses health risks but also puts a strain on the infrastructure.
