Former teammate and head coach Gautam Gambhir paid a glowing tribute to Virat Kohli after the star batter retired from Test cricket on Monday, 12 May. Kohli announced his decision to bring the curtain down on a decorated career just days before the India squad for the England tour in June was due to be selected.

“A man with a lion’s passion! Will miss you, cheeks,” Gambhir wrote in a social media post. Gambhir worked with Kohli as India’s head coach during the 2024-25 season, which ultimately turned out to be Kohli’s final chapter in Test cricket.

Kohli followed captain Rohit Sharma, who had called time on his Test career earlier in the month. India will now tour England for the five-Test series without the experience of two of their finest batters.

Meanwhile, ICC chairman Jay Shah also thanked Virat Kohli for his contributions to Test cricket, saying he championed the longest format of the game during the era of rise of T20 cricket.

“Congratulations Virat Kohli on a stellar Test career. Thank you for championing the purest format during the rise of T20 cricket and setting an extraordinary example in discipline, fitness, and commitment. Your speech at the Lord’s said it all – you played Tests with heart, grit, and pride,” Shah said.

Virat Kohli played 123 Tests and scored 9230 runs, including 30 hundreds. He averaged 46.85 in the format. He led India in 68 matches and won 40 of them, becoming one of the greatest captains to have led a team in the red-ball format.

Tributes have been pouring in for the 36-year-old, who was expected to be part of the five-Test series in England, starting June 20.

“The Greatest Indian Cricketer of all times bids adieu to Test cricket. Thank you Virat Kohli for being a cup of joy to world cricket – kahaan parre ho chakker mein koi nahin hai takker mein,” Navjot Singh Sidhu wrote.

Kohli’s good friend and former RCB teammate AB de Villiers wrote: “Congrats to my biscotti @imVkohli on an epic Test career! Your determination & skill have always inspired me. True legend!”

Kohli will continue to represent India in one-day internationals. The former captain has been in good form in T20s, scoring 505 runs in 11 matches in the now-suspended IPL 2025 season.
