Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro Flees to the U.S. After Election Loss
Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has left Brazil for the United States, two days after losing the presidential race to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to a senior official from the U.S. Department of State, Bolsonaro and his family have been granted visas to enter the U.S.
A source close to the senator confirmed his departure to Reuters, stating that he is likely heading to Florida. Reports indicate that Bolsonaro had not been seen in public since Tuesday morning, coinciding with a deadline to return his regular and diplomatic passports that expired at noon.
Bolsonaro is reportedly under investigation for alleged money laundering and other offenses and was served with an order to surrender his passports the day before he left, shortly after the election results were announced.
In the recent presidential runoff, President Lula secured a victory with nearly 51.8% of the vote, defeating Bolsonaro by around 4.4 million votes. Despite the loss, Bolsonaro has not acknowledged the election results and has claimed there was electoral fraud.
In his victory speech, Lula expressed heartfelt thanks to the Brazilian people and sought to unify the nation, stating, “No one is required to like the president-elect, but he must govern for everyone.” He emphasized that the outcome represents a victory over denial and dishonesty in politics.
The situation highlights the deep political divides within Brazil, as the country grapples with ongoing challenges in governance and trust in the electoral process.
