Splight’s Dynamic Congestion Manager Elevates Renewable Energy Transmission in Chile

Splight Launches Dynamic Congestion Manager to Boost Renewable Energy in Chile

Splight, a company focused on grid technology, has announced the launch of its Dynamic Congestion Manager (DCM) in Chile’s National Electric System (SEN). This innovative system is now responsible for the country’s first AI-driven automatic transfer control, enhancing the transmission capacity by an impressive 60 percent across key power corridors in the Biobío and La Araucanía regions. Notably, this increase was achieved without the need for any new transmission infrastructure.

The DCM constantly evaluates energy production by seven wind farms that are managed by companies such as ACCIONA Energía, Enel Green Power, and WPD in the southern part of Chile, known for its robust wind resources. These farms, including San Gabriel and La Cabaña, often face restrictions in their energy output due to static transmission limits which do not account for real-time conditions. By implementing the DCM, grid operators can now tap into unutilized capacity, allowing for a more flexible and efficient energy distribution.

With the DCM operational, the affected corridors are projected to generate an additional 41,000 MWh of renewable energy each year. This amount is equivalent to what around 20,000 households in Chile consume annually, and it is expected to help reduce electricity costs for consumers. ACCIONA estimates that this initiative will lead to a total of 239 GWh of extra clean energy generation during the project period.

The DCM tackles critical issues related to grid congestion and energy curtailment. In 2025, Chile’s grid restrictions led to over 6,000 GWh of renewable energy being cut back, which increased by 8 percent compared to the previous year, matching the annual energy needs of approximately 2.5 million homes. Unlike traditional transmission lines, which can take over a decade to build, the DCM can recover lost capacity in just a few months by optimizing existing infrastructure.

As an innovative solution, the DCM operates in real-time, continuously updating reliability standards based on current grid conditions rather than static assumptions. It processes data from the grid along with Splight’s advanced AI algorithms, promptly addressing any operational issues while collaborating with existing safety measures like relays and breakers.

The implementation of the DCM involved meticulous planning and validation to align with the high standards set by Chile’s national system operator, the Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional. Collaborating entities included ACCIONA Energía, Enel Green Power, and WPD, along with transmission companies Transelec and others. Moreover, the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (Usach) assisted in research confirming that AI-based control can meet the rigorous requirements of a national grid system.

Fernando Llaver, CEO of Splight, remarked, “Chile has demonstrated that the quickest new transmission line is actually the one you already possess. With DCM, the grid is equipped to monitor and react swiftly, achieving a 60% increase in clean energy flow without compromising reliability.”

Jaime Toledo, the CEO of ACCIONA Energía for South America, added, “This groundbreaking project enhances the efficiency of existing transmission capabilities, allowing for more renewable energy integration while decreasing energy costs for consumers.”

The situation in Chile reflects a larger issue faced by grids worldwide. For instance, in the United States, congestion costs in the PJM market rose dramatically to USD 3.2 billion in 2025, illustrating the urgent need for efficient solutions. The DCM stands out as a rapid deployment option that can help alleviate grid congestion, contrasting sharply with the lengthy process required for building new transmission lines, which typically takes about 10 to 15 years.

This technological advancement offers hope for improving renewable energy transmission, paving the way for more efficient energy management and sustainability efforts around the globe.
