England’s Under-15 soccer team made a strong statement during their FIFA Under-15 World Cup match against the Republic of Ireland on Monday by walking off the field. This action came after one of their players claimed he was subjected to racial abuse from an opponent. At the time of the incident, which occurred in Baku, Azerbaijan, Ireland was leading the game 4-1.

The issue arose during the last minute of the match following a confrontation between players of both teams. An England player reported the incident to the coaching staff, prompting head coach Matt Thorpe to bring his players to the sideline and inform the referee.

Reports indicate that the English player accused an Irish player of calling him a “monkey.” While this allegation is being looked into, an official investigation has yet to confirm the details. FIFA is currently gathering information to examine the situation further.

In the footage from the match, Thorpe is seen discussing the matter with the referee and then signals for his team to leave the field. An assistant coach can be heard stating, “We are reporting racism,” indicating that they did not wish to continue playing.

As the situation unfolded, an official approached the England bench to gather more information. The assistant coach reiterated the team’s position, explaining that players felt uncomfortable returning to play after the incident.

The scene was tense, as there were heated exchanges between the coaching staffs while England’s players stood to the side. Ultimately, Thorpe’s decision to withdraw his team resulted in the game being abandoned.

FIFA has acknowledged the event, confirming that the match was terminated after England opted not to continue. A spokesperson for the organization stated, “FIFA is aware of an incident at the FIFA Under-15 World Cup and Festival match between England and the Republic of Ireland,” and added that the governing body is gathering reports ahead of a review by its independent disciplinary committee, which will determine any necessary actions.

The Football Association of England is reportedly taking the matter very seriously and is supporting its players and staff during this challenging time. Meanwhile, the Football Association of Ireland has been contacted for their comments.

The match was part of the first-ever FIFA Under-15 World Cup and Festival, featuring teams from 189 nations. The tournament follows an eight-a-side format, with each game consisting of two 20-minute halves on smaller pitches.

Before facing Ireland, England had won all three of their previous matches against Cambodia, Montenegro, and Nicaragua. Later on Monday, both teams were scheduled to play their final group games, with England set to meet Zimbabwe and Ireland going up against Cambodia.
