Anupam Kher is set to star in the upcoming film Out of Fashion, a collaboration between Swedish and Belgian filmmakers. Directed by Jens Jonsson, the film features actor-writer Sunil Munshi in the leading role. The story revolves around an Indian-origin fashion designer, who juggles the demanding fashion scene in Paris while managing family obligations back in Sweden. Filming for this exciting project has officially begun in Stockholm.
Out of Fashion marks Jens Jonsson’s return to feature films after a seven-year stint in television, where he gained acclaim for his work, including winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for The King of Ping Pong.
The screenplay, crafted by Munshi, focuses on Armand Kaiser, a talented fashion designer facing a major challenge at work. Set in Paris, Armand is under pressure to launch a completely new collection in just three weeks to secure his job. However, his life takes a turn when he learns that his father in Sala, Sweden, is suffering from dementia, and his sister needs assistance with her three children. Torn between his career and family, Armand embarks on a journey to the Himalayas to fulfill his father’s final wish.
Anupam Kher will portray Armand’s father, a crucial figure in the emotional core of the film. Kher’s diverse career spans both Indian and international cinema, with notable appearances in films like Bend It Like Beckham, Lust, Caution, and Silver Linings Playbook.
Munshi’s personal experiences, especially his bond with his father, heavily influence the screenplay. The film centers around an Indian-origin family within a Swedish context, delving into themes of cultural identity, belonging, and intergenerational relationships.
The film’s supporting cast includes talent from various backgrounds, such as Bahar Pars, Helena Bergström, Krista Kosonen, and Astrid Whettnall, adding to the project’s international flavor.
Out of Fashion is being produced by Way Feature Films along with co-production partners such as Beside Productions, Film i Skåne, Film Stockholm, and SVT, while Scanbox Entertainment will handle its distribution. The project has also received backing from the Swedish Film Institute and the Belgian Tax Shelter.
Principal photography is set to take place in Stockholm, Sala, Brussels, and Paris from October to December 2026, with a theatrical release anticipated for early 2028. The film promises to explore the intersection of fashion industry pressures, family responsibilities, and personal identity, making it a compelling watch with Kher in a pivotal role.
