Athletics Coach Mohammad Yunus Khan Suspended Amid Anti-Doping Investigation
Mohammad Yunus Khan, the athletics coach famed for nurturing distance runner Gulveer Singh, has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) due to an alleged violation of anti-doping rules. The specific details surrounding the charges against Khan have not been disclosed.
Khan, who coaches middle- and long-distance runners at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, faces allegations under Article 2.9 of the NADA Rules. This article addresses intentional complicity in doping violations, which includes assisting or covering up such offenses.
In addition to coaching Gulveer, who has made remarkable strides in his career, Khan has also played a role in the development of other notable athletes, including Kartik Kumar and marathon runner Sawan Barwal. NADA has recently imposed provisional suspensions on several other athletes, including seven track and field competitors, three wrestlers, and two weightlifters.
Understanding the Allegations
Khan’s coaching journey began after his own success as a national-level runner. He discovered Gulveer during a cross-country event in Arunachal Pradesh in 2021. Since then, Gulveer has become a prominent name in Indian athletics, earning silver medals in both the 1,500m and 10,000m events and securing a bronze in the 5,000m at the recent Asian Games.
Gulveer joined the Indian Army in 2018 and has since trained abroad, recently moving to Colorado Springs to work under coach Scott Simmons.
Notable Achievements Under Khan’s Guidance
Gulveer has set multiple national records, further showcasing his skills on an international stage. Meanwhile, Khan’s coaching influence extends to Kartik Kumar, who clinched a silver medal in the 10,000m event at the 2022 Asian Games before facing a suspension for doping violations. Another athlete, Sawan Barwal, was guided by Khan to transition to marathon running, leading him to break a long-standing national record during a race in Rotterdam.
Continuing Investigations and Broader Impact
While Khan’s suspension is currently provisional, it remains unclear whether he tested positive for any banned substances. Other athletes suspended by NADA include hammer thrower Samir Deshmukh and several runners, highlighting ongoing issues within the sport.
The situation is being closely monitored as NADA investigates the allegations further, which has stirred discussions around doping in athletics and the responsibilities of coaches in ensuring fair play.
