A woman was rescued by the Greek Coast Guard after spending 20 hours in the water, clinging to a lifebuoy. The 44-year-old from El Salvador fell overboard from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Odyssey of the Seas, while it was sailing through the Ionian Sea near the island of Zakynthos.
The rescue effort began when a cargo ship called MSC Rossella III, which was aiding in the search, spotted her in the dark waters. The crew notified the coast guard, who responded quickly, throwing her ropes to pull her to safety.
Authorities revealed that the woman had jumped off the ship because she wanted to leave the vessel. After her dramatic rescue, she was taken to the port of Katakolo and then to a local hospital. There, a prosecutor ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
This incident comes after a different occurrence last year when a man leaped from another Royal Caribbean ship in Puerto Rico to escape a gambling debt, highlighting the unpredictable situations that can happen on cruise ships.
