Indians Joining Russian Armed Forces: Government Update
New Delhi: On Wednesday, the Indian government revealed that some citizens who had previously left the Russian army after being assisted by Indian authorities have now rejoined and disappeared.
During a court hearing before Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati presented a report from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). She stated, “There are several cases where individuals voluntarily seek to join the Russian military, often lured by promises of financial rewards, with the expectation that they can return home by seeking help from the Indian government.”
The MEA further noted that some Indians traveling to Russia for tourism, studies, or work are showing interest in enlisting in the Russian military due to temporary financial incentives. The report mentioned that there have been instances where individuals have even expressed a desire to renounce their Indian citizenship, obtain a Russian passport, and enlist in the Russian forces.
This emerging trend raises concerns as more citizens are considering such options for quick monetary gains. The government continues to monitor the situation closely.
