Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Anil Mohod has made history at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games by winning two gold medals in archery. She is the first Indian to claim a gold medal in the recurve women’s individual event and has also secured a spot for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Mohod’s remarkable achievements came just a day after she teamed up with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti to win India’s inaugural gold in the recurve women’s team category, ending Korea’s remarkable streak of seven consecutive team titles at the Asian Games.
For the first time in nearly 50 years, the Korean women’s recurve team returned home without a gold medal from the continental event, highlighting the significance of India’s victories.
Starting her final day of competition as the ninth seed, Mohod shocked everyone with a 6-4 win against Korea’s top seed and reigning World Champion Kang Chaeyoung. She followed that with a strong performance, defeating China’s world number three, Zhu Jingyi, with a score of 6-2.
In the final match, Mohod faced Korea’s Oh Yejin. After trailing at 3-5 going into the final end, the young archer delivered an outstanding final round with scores of X, X, and 10, while Yejin shot 9, 9, and 10, leading to a shoot-off.
In the tiebreaker, Mohod maintained her composure, scoring an X, while Yejin managed only an eight. This impressive performance secured Mohod’s victory with a final score of 6-5, making her the first Indian woman to win the individual gold medal at this prestigious event.
