Co-Pilot Attack on FlyDubai Flight: Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating a shocking incident involving a co-pilot from FlyDubai, who reportedly attacked the flight captain during a flight bound for Tel Aviv. The co-pilot, named Hamam al-Hammami, a 29-year-old from Oman, allegedly used a cockpit tool referred to as a “crash axe” against Captain Smit Machchhar, causing a dangerous drop in altitude before passengers intervened to regain control of the aircraft.
Reports indicate that al-Hammami was previously barred from flying with Oman Air due to concerns about his potential extremist views. Sources suggest that he had spent significant time outside of Oman, including living with his mother who is of Syrian descent. Furthermore, it seems FlyDubai did not conduct a thorough background check on al-Hammami prior to hiring him.
The investigation, currently led by authorities in the United Arab Emirates, is looking into whether al-Hammami acted alone or if he has ties to any extremist groups. Additional concerns have emerged after reports that Oman had previously prevented him from flying, citing similar worries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack as an act of terrorism, indicating that the assailant had undergone “Islamic radicalization,” and believed the intent was to harm the passengers onboard.
This alarming situation has raised questions about airline security protocols, particularly regarding the screening of pilots. As the investigation continues, many are awaiting further updates regarding the events on the FlyDubai flight and the measures that will be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
