TEHRAN: Two oil tankers were hit by unknown projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a British maritime agency on Friday. This incident marks a worrying escalation in threats to shipping in this vital waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global oil and liquefied natural gas transport, with around one-fifth of the world’s supply passing through it. The situation has become more tense following strikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iran earlier this year, which intensified the ongoing conflict in the region.
In response to perceived threats, Iran has been stopping commercial ships and has even fired upon vessels that it believes have crossed its borders illegally. This has led the U.S. to impose a counter blockade on Iranian ports to curtail Iran’s oil exports.
The first attack resulted in a small fire and a temporary power outage on one of the tankers, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished, and there were no injuries or environmental damage. The ship, which was leaving the strait, was able to continue its journey without further issues, although details about its departure and destination were not disclosed.
Shortly after this incident, another tanker reported being hit by an unknown projectile east of Oman. Again, all crew members were safe, and there were no reported environmental impacts. The UKMTO stated that authorities are currently looking into both incidents.
