India Aims to Become a Global Trade Powerhouse
In a recent event in Chicago, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted India’s ambitious plans to expand its trade network. He emphasized that the country is working towards establishing free trade agreements that could cover up to 75-80% of the world’s economies.
Speaking to the audience at the US Indian Community Foundation event, Goyal pointed out that India has been actively engaging in trade negotiations over the past few years. Currently, there are six to eight ongoing discussions aimed at enhancing trade relations with various countries. Before 2014, India’s trade agreements covered economies with a collective GDP of around $10 trillion. However, recent initiatives have dramatically increased this figure to approximately $60 trillion for the newer agreements.
“Some of these negotiations are progressing well and are expected to conclude in the next six to eight months,” Goyal said. He expressed confidence that India is on the path to becoming a key player in a global trade network.
With this expanding trade network, Indian companies will gain better access to international markets, enhancing their integration into global supply chains. The aim is to lower tariffs on specific goods and simplify trade rules across services, investments, and other economic areas.
Targeting a $30 Trillion Economy by 2047
Goyal also urged both American and Indian-American entrepreneurs to seize the opportunities presented by India’s economic growth. With aspirations to grow from a $4 trillion economy today to a $30 trillion economy by 2047, he invited business leaders to be part of this journey. “This is a tremendous opportunity for your businesses and for the shared prosperity of both the United States and India,” he stated.
Furthermore, Goyal expressed India’s commitment to becoming a developed nation by 2047, marking a century of independence. He affirmed that the country’s 1.4 billion citizens are united in this goal, striving for enhanced quality of life and economic growth.
Highlighting India’s youthful demographic and ambitious spirit, Goyal noted, “Our average age is just 30 years, which brings a lot of energy and potential for innovation.” He pointed to advancements in manufacturing, infrastructure, and digital connectivity as indicators of the country’s rapid progress.
Strengthening US-India Business Ties
During his Chicago visit, Goyal engaged with various businesses and professional groups to explore investment opportunities and strengthen collaboration between the US and India. He held talks with leaders from several companies, including Archer Daniels Midland, where they discussed potential investments in India’s growing food processing sector.
“India’s modern agricultural value chains and large consumer base present significant opportunities for sustainable growth,” Goyal remarked.
He also engaged with the CEO of Aon to discuss the range of business services that India offers, reinforcing the notion of India as a growing hub for talent and innovation. His discussions included exploring advances in artificial intelligence and how companies can deepen their presence in the Indian market.
In addition to business meetings, Goyal took part in a roundtable discussion hosted by the US-India Business Council focused on startups and innovation. This platform allowed him to explore ways to support high-growth enterprises and enhance India-US innovation links.
Government Support for Businesses
Goyal emphasized the role of government institutions, like Invest India, as valuable partners in navigating the investment landscape. He noted the collaborative potential between the technological strengths of the US and the ambitious goals of India.
His Chicago itinerary followed his participation in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, where he met with various investors and companies to discuss future partnerships.
The minister remains optimistic about the future, sharing insights on his engagements through social media and continuing to promote stronger business connections between India and the United States.
