Fredonia School District Welcomes New Teachers Amid Hiring Challenges
The Fredonia Central School District has made significant progress in filling its teaching positions recently by hiring new educators to join the team.
During a Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Brad Zilliox shared the district’s excitement about bringing in Emily Johnson as a Business and Marketing teacher. Johnson, who will serve a four-year probationary term, comes with Initial Certification in Business and Marketing and a solid background that includes teaching at various districts. She holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration and boasts considerable experience in the business world.
“We’re extremely pleased to have Emily with us,” said Dr. Zilliox. He added, “Her blend of teaching experience from institutions like Catt. Little Valley and Jamestown, combined with her real-world insights, will be invaluable.”
High School Principal Ron Tonelli emphasized Johnson’s involvement with the Future Business Leaders of America, expressing confidence that she could successfully integrate similar programs at Fredonia.
Board President Steve Johnston echoed this sentiment, noting, “Emily’s professional experience is music to our ears.”
In addition, the Board approved James Lehner as the new Technology Teacher for the district. He is set to begin a four-year probationary term under the Fredonia Teachers’ Association Contract and brings with him Professional Certification in Technology Education.
Dr. Zilliox also mentioned the ongoing challenge of filling Business and Technology positions. He celebrated the new hires for their ability to share practical skills with students, highlighting the importance of real-world experience in education.
While the district has made strides in staffing, there is still an open position for a Special Education Teacher at the Middle School that needs to be filled.
Additionally, the Board extended a three-year contract for Andrew Wheelock, the Instructional Technology Specialist and Data Protection Officer, through the 2028-29 school year. Dr. Margie Wright, Chief Officer for Curriculum and Human Resources, praised Wheelock, describing him as a “genuine, wonderful human being who just wants to help.”
The next regular meeting of the Fredonia Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, at 6 p.m. in the High School Library.
