On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump is set to hold a meeting at the White House with major technology leaders to discuss the future of artificial intelligence (AI). House Speaker Mike Johnson will be attending the meeting. Recently, he expressed his opposition to implementing a pause or excessive regulations on AI development. Speaking on Fox Business, Johnson warned that too much government interference could put the U.S. behind China in the tech race.
He emphasized the importance of finding a approach that keeps innovation alive while also ensuring safety. “We need to keep innovating, but we must strike the right balance,” he asserted.
The conversation around AI safety is increasingly urgent. Major AI companies, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI, have urged caution about the rapid advancement of powerful AI models and the associated risks for safety.
Trump has consistently highlighted that maintaining a technological advantage over China should be a top priority for the U.S. He noted that some existing controls are already in place through the Department of Justice. Similarly, Johnson acknowledged that, while safety concerns are valid, the goal should not be to bring the industry to a standstill.
“I believe the Department of Justice can intervene if issues arise. Meanwhile, we require transparency and oversight,” he stated.
On the legislative front, there is no clear agreement among Congress members. Lawmakers from both political parties have expressed concerns about the Trump administration’s hands-off strategy, citing issues like security risks, possible job losses, and the dominance of a few large tech firms. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries remarked that leaders in the AI field expect the government to take decisive action.
“When it comes to AI safety, we must act swiftly and responsibly,” Jeffries told CNBC.
Ahead of the meeting, Trump also enjoyed dinner with Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, which has been vocal in advocating for a more cautious approach to the evolution of advanced AI systems.
