England Completes T20I Series Sweep Against Sri Lanka
In a resounding victory, England defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third T20I at Old Trafford, securing a clean sweep of the series with a 3-0 win. Chasing a target of 125 runs, England comfortably reached 126 for 2 in just 9.4 overs.
Sri Lanka struggled to set a challenging score, getting bowled out for 124 runs. The English bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings. Once England’s Jos Buttler and Harry Brook began batting, the match quickly turned in their favor.
Buttler showcased his talent by scoring an impressive 62 runs not out off 32 balls, finishing the game with a six over square leg. Brook also made a valuable contribution with 33 runs before being run out, forming a crucial partnership of 85 runs with Buttler in just 39 balls.
England started strong, reaching 82 runs for the loss of just one wicket by the end of the powerplay and crossed the century mark in the eighth over itself. Buttler’s excellent performance reinforced his vital role in the team, especially considering he had recently surpassed 15,000 T20 runs in the second match of the series.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s batting lineup struggled to find rhythm. Pathum Nissanka was the standout performer, scoring 36 runs from 24 balls, while Kamindu Mendis contributed 35 runs off 28 balls. However, after their dismissals, the Sri Lankan innings faltered as wickets fell at regular intervals, hampering their ability to build partnerships.
Sonny Baker continued to impress with his bowling, taking 2 wickets for just 17 runs, while Jofra Archer claimed 2 wickets for 23 runs and Will Jacks took 2 for 31. Jamie Overton, in particular, was economical with figures of 1 for 15 off four overs, along with some outstanding fielding moments, including a direct hit from Liam Dawson.
Sri Lanka’s inability to capitalize on favorable conditions contributed to their woes. Despite a strong breeze, they couldn’t exploit the shorter boundary effectively and lost wickets at crucial moments, resulting in a score that never really posed a threat to England, even in the absence of injured players like Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell.
This victory marked England’s 23rd win in their last 26 completed T20 internationals since Harry Brook took over as captain in 2024, also elevating them back to the top spot in the ICC T20I rankings, while India fell to second place.
For Sri Lanka, the defeat added to their ongoing struggles against England, marking their 15th consecutive loss in T20Is against them.
Looking ahead, England is set to shift their focus to One Day Internationals, with a three-match series against Sri Lanka starting in Durham on Tuesday. This series will serve as preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
