The West Indies cricket team has announced its players for the upcoming white-ball tour in India. Led by captain Shai Hope, the squad will compete in three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and five Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) from September 27 to October 18. The matches will take place in eight different cities across India.
As the West Indies prepare to face the world’s top-ranked team in both formats, Hope remains at the helm for this series. The ODI team is mostly made up of players who recently played in the home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
John Campbell is making a comeback to the ODI squad after missing the last two matches against New Zealand due to a hamstring injury. Shimron Hetmyer has also been included in the T20I squad after taking some extra time off to recover following the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
New Talent: Kamil Pooran
In a notable addition, opening batter Kamil Pooran has received his first T20I call-up following a strong performance during the Caribbean Premier League, where he scored 273 runs in just eight innings with a strike rate of 159.64 and an average of 39. His impressive showing has earned him a spot on the West Indies T20I team as they look toward building a competitive side for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Quentin Sampson, who played in the T20 World Cup earlier this year, is also part of the squad. Meanwhile, all-rounder Jason Holder has been rested from this series. Head coach Daren Sammy explained that the squad selection was aimed at improving the team’s long-term potential.
“We want to build on our recent success against Sri Lanka and focus on establishing a solid group of players as we approach the next T20 World Cup,” Sammy said. “Playing against the World Champions at home offers us a great chance to develop and grow both as individuals and as a team.”
John Campbell’s Comeback
John Campbell has made his return to the ODI squad after missing some games due to injury. Ackeem Auguste will not join the team for the tour as he continues recovering from surgery. Jewel Andrew has taken Auguste’s place and will add depth to the batting order.
Hetmyer, who participated in the final two ODIs against New Zealand, will rejoin the team for the T20I matches following his recovery period.
World Cup Qualification
The upcoming ODIs will also conclude the automatic qualification cycle for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Unfortunately, the West Indies will not be able to move up the standings regardless of their results in India and will need to take part in the qualification tournament next year.
Sammy mentioned that this series is a crucial chance for the ODI team to prepare for the next stage in their development. “Facing the best team in the world is a perfect opportunity to sharpen our skills as we work towards the 2027 World Cup,” he said. “This series will help us evaluate players stepping into key roles for the future.”
