New Research Highlights Risks of Sleeping with Lights On
A recent study from Tulane University has brought to light new worries about sleeping with the lights on, linking nighttime light exposure to a greater chance of heart-related issues. This research points to a connection between light levels higher than 3 lux—similar to the brightness of a full moon—and an increased risk of serious conditions like heart failure, irregular heartbeats, heart attacks, strokes, and even cardiovascular death.
Experts have shared their insights about the potential dangers of using nightlights during sleep. Dr. Chelsie Rohrscheib, a sleep expert and neuroscientist from Michigan, noted that our sleep patterns are largely guided by the circadian rhythm, which is the body’s internal clock that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. She explained that when light enters our eyes, it signals the brain to reduce melatonin production— a hormone essential for sleep. Conversely, lower light levels encourage the brain to produce more melatonin.
Rohrscheib added that the rise of melatonin in the evening helps prepare both our brain and body for sleep. Unfortunately, artificial light from various sources can trick the brain into creating less melatonin, which can degrade sleep quality over time.
Impact on Health
According to Rohrscheib, regular exposure to light during sleep can lead to consistently poor sleep quality. Sleep serves vital functions, such as restoring the body and brain, regulating hormones, supporting the immune system, and aiding memory and metabolism. When sleep quality suffers, it can raise the risk of numerous chronic health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and even certain cancers.
A different study conducted by Northwestern Medicine found that just one night of sleeping under moderate light disrupted glucose levels, raised heart rates, and affected the body’s sympathetic nervous system. Sleep disturbances have even been linked to premature death.
Dr. Ashley Curtis from the University of South Florida highlighted that sleeplessness can also have adverse effects on gut health, which impacts digestion and immunity. She warned that while the immediate effects of poor sleep are concerning, the long-term risks to health are even more significant.
Who Is Most Affected?
Certain groups may be more sensitive to light when trying to sleep, according to specialists. Shift workers, children, older adults, and those suffering from insomnia or mood disorders may experience more intense effects from light exposure.
While older individuals may become less sensitive to light, they also face more sleep disruptions overall, which can further complicate their sleep patterns.
Experts advocate creating a sleep-friendly environment. While blackout curtains can enhance sleep, achieving total darkness isn’t necessary. Dim, warm lights are recommended over bright, harsh ones, as they are less disruptive to melatonin production.
Light Types and Their Effects
Blue light from screens is particularly harmful because it heavily disrupts melatonin production. In contrast, warmer, dimmer lights—like those in orange or red tones—are less intrusive.
For those struggling with sleep, it is advisable to make some changes to promote better rest:
- Turn off bright lights an hour or two before bedtime.
- Position nightlights low to the ground.
- Use warm-toned, dim bulbs.
- Avoid all screen time at least one hour before bed.
- Layer curtains to soften any bright lights from outside.
- Consider wearing a sleep mask to block out light.
