Ricky Ponting Proposes T20 Makeover to Boost Cricket’s Appeal in the USA: Rename the Game!

Ricky Ponting Proposes T20 Rebranding to Boost Cricket’s Popularity in the U.S.

Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has put forward a bold idea to enhance the marketing of cricket in the United States. He suggests that the sport should be marketed simply as “T20,” rather than using the term “cricket.”

Even though the US will co-host the 2024 T20 World Cup and achieved a surprising victory over Pakistan to make it to the Super 8s, cricket still faces significant challenges in gaining a foothold alongside sports like baseball, football, and basketball. Major League Cricket (MLC) has established a professional foundation for the game, but cricket remains largely under the radar.

Ponting argues that the term “cricket” might deter young Americans, who typically view the sport as a lengthy five-day affair. He believes that emphasizing T20, which offers a shorter and more dynamic format, would resonate better with a younger audience unfamiliar with cricket.

“If I were introducing this sport to the US, I wouldn’t call it cricket; I would just focus on T20,” Ponting shared in an interview. He pointed out that when young people hear “cricket,” they often think of the old-fashioned, drawn-out matches that can last for days.

To illustrate T20’s appeal, Ponting suggested using baseball as a reference point. He mentioned that a typical T20 match features about 15 sixes, while baseball usually sees less than one home run per game. “Comparing it to baseball might help kids appreciate the excitement of T20 cricket,” he explained.

Ponting’s Views on Test and ODI Cricket in the U.S.

Ponting expressed his doubts about promoting Test and One Day International (ODI) formats in a market like the US, where cricket is still trying to gain popularity. He acknowledged his love for Test cricket but emphasized the need to focus on establishing T20 first.

Major League Cricket, launched in 2023, currently hosts six city-based teams in California and Texas. While the league does not have permanent home venues for all teams, it has garnered attention from prominent investors, including leaders from Microsoft, Adobe, and India’s Ambani family.

MLC aims to expand to eight teams in the coming years and has attracted several international stars, including Australian cricketer Steve Smith, who has competed in the league.

Ponting, now the head coach of the Washington Freedom, has been involved with MLC since the beginning. However, he admitted that the growth of cricket in the US has been slower than he had anticipated. “I wanted to be part of cricket’s development in the US, but progress has been slower than expected. I feel there hasn’t been enough grassroots promotion,” he concluded.

As cricket continues its journey in America, Ponting’s insights could play a crucial role in shaping the future of the sport in the country.
