India’s Private Sector Celebrates a Century of Strength and Resilience
Mumbai, India, September 4, 2026 – In a historic event, the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) celebrated its 100th anniversary by launching a new book titled Never Taking No for an Answer: India’s Indomitable Private Enterprise. This book compiles valuable perspectives from some of the country’s foremost business leaders and innovators, reflecting on the journey of India’s private sector.
The celebration took place in Mumbai and featured a lively conversation hosted by the Young Leaders Forum (YLF), the youth affiliate of the ICC. Ankit Gupta, Chairperson of the YLF, moderated a discussion that included prominent figures such as Dr. Rajiv Kumar, a respected economist and former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, and Shri Ajay Piramal, the Chairman of Piramal Group.
During the discussion, Ajay Piramal emphasized the significance of values in leadership. “While businesses may evolve, the core values should remain constant,” he stated. “Integrity, humility, and the willingness to take risks are essential for any leader. Young people today are eager for genuine experiences, and it’s vital for older generations to lead by example.”
Dr. Rajiv Kumar added insights into India’s economic prospects, highlighting the importance of innovation and research. “India still has a long way to go in achieving its goals, including becoming a $5 trillion economy,” he pointed out. He encouraged a mindset of continuous learning, urging both young and older generations to embrace knowledge and adaptability.
Gupta shared his thoughts on the need for young leaders to learn from past experiences while also paving new paths. “Our aim at the YLF is to encourage bold thinking and purposeful building among young Indians,” he said. “By sharing stories of resilience and innovation, we hope to inspire the next generation.”
Sangeeta Jain, Chair of the ICC Maharashtra State Council, acknowledged the contributions of all participants, stressing the importance of collaboration between government and the business community to foster growth in India.
Never Taking No for an Answer captures the rich history of Indian private enterprise, featuring essays from renowned business personalities like Kumar Mangalam Birla, Sanjiv Goenka, and Ratan Jindal, among others. It chronicles the evolution of businesses in India from the freedom struggle through the era of liberalization, highlighting their role in transforming the economy.
The book’s title symbolizes the unwavering spirit of India’s entrepreneurs, who continuously turn challenges into opportunities and strive for excellence.
