Challenges in India’s Aviation Industry Amid Safety and Financial Issues
India’s aviation industry, recognized as the third-largest domestic market in the world, is currently navigating a series of challenges related to safety, regulations, and financial losses, particularly affecting two major airlines: Air India and IndiGo. Together, these airlines carry about 90% of the passengers on domestic flights in India.
Recently, an Air India flight from Phuket to New Delhi faced a serious incident when it unexpectedly dropped 91 meters mid-air, resulting in injuries to 24 passengers. Following the flight, it was discovered that the captain had tested positive for marijuana. In response, Air India has mandated a drug test for all pilots, and preliminary investigations into the incident are underway.
Concerns Surrounding Air India
This recent event has raised alarms about Air India’s safety practices, especially after a tragic incident last year involving a Boeing 787 that resulted in the deaths of 241 individuals. A report from a parliamentary committee highlighted about 100 safety issues with Air India, including urgent violations that needed fixing and concerns regarding the training of pilots for the Boeing 787 and Boeing 777.
Shakti Lumba, a former aviation operations chief, stated that there is a significant weakness in Air India’s safety culture. Jitender Bhargava, a former executive director of Air India, also pointed out issues regarding how management oversees pilots, especially after the drug-related incident. As of now, both Air India and IndiGo have not provided comments on these incidents.
Financial Struggles and Regulatory Pressures
The safety problems facing the airlines coincide with mounting financial pressures. The closure of airspace over Pakistan due to rising tensions has forced Indian airlines to take longer and costlier flight paths. Furthermore, increasing jet fuel prices, partly due to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, have added to this financial strain.
According to ICRA, a credit rating agency, Indian airlines are expected to lose nearly $4 billion in the current financial year. Air India’s losses from the previous year have more than doubled to $2.3 billion, while IndiGo has reported losses for two consecutive quarters. Recently, IndiGo stopped operating wide-body aircraft, and Air India is reportedly considering postponing the delivery of up to 500 new airplanes.
In addition, IndiGo faced significant flight cancellations last year due to inadequate preparations for new pilot fatigue regulations. Experts viewed this as a sign of underlying issues with India’s aviation regulator, the DGCA. Over the past decade, India has added more than 70 airports, and local airlines have placed significant orders for around 1,500 new aircraft. Last year, Indian carriers transported about 167 million passengers, which is more than double the number from ten years ago.
