RSS Chief Highlights Unity in Diversity at Madison Square Garden Rally

Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), emphasized the importance of celebrating diversity in India during a significant gathering of the Indian-American community at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. Speaking to over 6,000 attendees, including interfaith leaders, Bhagwat shared a message of togetherness, urging everyone to respect and honor the rich diversity that embodies India’s heritage.

At the “Universal Oneness Celebration,” arranged by the American Hindus For Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD), Bhagwat articulated a comparison between the United States and India. He noted that while America often talks about pluralism, India proudly embraces the concept of “unity in diversity.” His remarks earned applause from the audience, reinforcing the notion that diversity is a vital part of India’s cultural DNA.

Citing the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, Bhagwat stated, “Every nation has a mission,” pointing out that India’s purpose is to demonstrate and spread the idea of unity amidst diversity. He expressed that this sense of oneness is enriched by the various cultures and backgrounds that make up the country.

In his nearly hour-long speech, Bhagwat encouraged attendees to give back to their communities, saying, “We owe everything to someone else. It’s not about how much we earn, but how much we share.” He called upon the Indian diaspora living in the U.S. to remain faithful to their “karmabhoomi,” or land of action, highlighting the significance of fulfilling responsibilities in the country they currently reside in while also honoring their roots in India, their “janmabhoomi” or motherland.

He described a nation as more than just land, emphasizing that every country, including India, has a unique destiny that its people must strive to achieve. According to Bhagwat, fulfilling these duties can provide support and solutions to the world’s ongoing challenges.

Prior to his address, interfaith leaders highlighted themes of kindness, unity, and the importance of helping one another. Notable speakers included Rabbi Jacob Blumenthal and Reverend Adriene Thorne, who echoed the celebration of oneness and service.

The event was not just about speeches but also featured cultural performances that showcased the musical richness of India and other regions worldwide. Young performers highlighted various global cultures, emphasizing the message that “the world is one family.”

In a collective effort, around 180 religious leaders from 30 countries presented a five-point action plan aimed at fostering unity and collaboration across communities. Their shared pledge included standing up for those in need and creating connections before crises arise.

In his closing remarks, Bhagwat reiterated the importance of understanding that while diversity exists, the underlying truth is our shared humanity. He encouraged everyone to live by the principle that diversity is a natural aspect of life while unity is fundamental to our existence.
