Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee made strong statements during a rally on Friday, reinforcing his party’s stance against members who have defected to rival factions. His comments gained added weight following recent notices from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, addressing 20 rebel TMC MPs who merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
During the rally, which marked the foundation day of the TMC’s student wing, the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, Banerjee emphasized the value of “youth power” in changing the political landscape, asserting that young people have compelled those in power to take notice. He made it clear that no “traitor” who left the party to join opposing groups would be welcomed back, referencing those who sought personal safety while benefiting from positions within the BJP.
Banerjee’s remarks brought attention to the current political climate, especially in light of Speaker Birla’s request for the rebel MPs to respond within seven days to a disqualification petition. This request aligns with a larger legal discussion prompted by an appeal from Banerjee concerning the MPs’ status.
Highlighting the significance of student activism, he claimed that recent protests have shaken the political elite in Delhi. Banerjee specifically mentioned a recent issue involving the NEET-UG exam, which led to mass outrage and the resignation of the Union Education Minister. He critiqued the BJP’s governance, contrasting their benefits for the public with those offered during the TMC’s prior leadership.
He pointed out that while the previous TMC government provided more extensive assistance through programs like Lakshmir Bhandar, the current administration struggles to fulfill its commitments under new initiatives. Banerjee accused the BJP of neglecting a large portion of beneficiaries previously served by TMC programs.
In a response to local tensions, particularly concerning local governance and police actions against TMC symbols, he warned opponents about underestimating his party’s resilience. He expressed confidence that the TMC would remain steadfast even in the face of heavy opposition from various law enforcement agencies.
Banerjee concluded by dismissing rumors about his leaving the country, pledging his continuous commitment to the party and its cause, reiterating that he would not be defeated as long as he is alive.
