Christine Lagarde May Succeed in Leading the World Economic Forum by 2027
Christine Lagarde, the head of the European Central Bank (ECB), is being considered for the presidency of the World Economic Forum (WEF) as early as 2027, according to a report from Swiss newspaper NZZ.
During a recent board meeting held near Geneva, Lagarde was mentioned as a potential candidate for the role, with sources indicating she expressed her willingness to take on the position.
Currently, the WEF is co-chaired by André Hoffmann, vice-chairman of Roche, and Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock. They are guiding the organization through a leadership change following the resignation of its founder, Klaus Schwab, last year.
Singapore’s President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, mentioned during the board meeting that the future leadership of the WEF should come from within the organization, stating that there are qualified candidates available.
Lagarde, who has served on the WEF board for several terms, has expressed gratitude to her fellow board members for their support. While discussions about her potential presidency were held, the board did not reach a consensus on when she should officially take over. However, it was agreed that Fink and Hoffmann would continue to lead the annual meeting in Davos in January 2027.
As for the WEF’s response to requests for comment, they did not provide immediate feedback. Lagarde has previously emphasized her commitment to completing her term at the ECB, which will conclude at the end of October 2027.
