A rapidly spreading brush fire in Northern Nevada, just outside of Reno, has expanded to over 10,500 acres as of Saturday evening. The fire, named the Hawk Fire, has reached a size of 10,523 acres, according to the mapping platform Perimeter Map.
In response to the growing threat, the Reno Police have urged residents to check Perimeter Map for the latest evacuation updates. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has also declared a state of emergency in Washoe County because of the fire’s progression.
In a related incident, the New Spain fire has led to the evacuation of approximately 800 people near the Portugal border.
Richard Edwards, the chief of Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue, described the situation as a “very dynamic incident” due to strong winds. He mentioned in a video posted on social media that the wind-fueled fires can move quickly into residential neighborhoods, posing significant challenges for firefighters who are working diligently to protect homes and keep residents safe.
