India Women’s Hockey Team Falls Short in World Cup, Captain Reflects on Missed Chances
In a heart-wrenching match, the Indian women’s hockey team saw their World Cup dreams dashed after a goalless draw against Australia in Amstelveen. Indian captain Salima Tete expressed her disappointment, highlighting the team’s missed chances that could have changed the outcome.
Australia secured a place in the semi-finals based on goals scored, while India, despite a strong defensive effort, couldn’t find the back of the net when it mattered most. This match was particularly significant—five years earlier, India had pulled off a remarkable victory against Australia, winning 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics. Unfortunately, they were unable to replicate that success this time.
“We don’t feel good about this. We came so close, but we let the game slip away,” said Salima after the match. “We need to learn from this experience, and while it was tough, we had our chances that we didn’t take.”
Despite the disappointment, Salima emphasized the team’s spirit: “We lose as a team, and we will fight to finish fifth. This World Cup isn’t over for us yet.”
Missed Opportunities Linger for India
Throughout the match, India created several opportunities but struggled to convert them into goals. Their best chance came just before half-time when Nikki found herself open during a penalty corner, but she missed the shot.
In the third quarter, Deepika also missed an important opportunity after a promising setup by Navneet and Baljeet. As the final quarter began, Salima made a great low cross to Navneet within the circle, but hesitation between her and teammate Lalremsiami allowed the Australian defense to shut down the chance. Navneet had also faced pressure from defenders earlier in the game, making scoring difficult.
As time ran out, India made a bold move, replacing goalkeeper Bichu Devi with an additional outfield player, but they were still unable to create any clear scoring chances.
Despite India’s struggles, they did get some breaks when Australia had two potential goals disallowed after successful appeals from the Indian team. However, the Hockeyroos held their ground firmly, leading India to reflect on what might have been.
India started their tournament campaign with a 2-2 draw against China, followed by a convincing 6-1 win over South Africa. They then faced a goalless draw against England and a 0-2 defeat to the Netherlands, ultimately ending their semi-final hopes with the draw against Australia.
The journey in the World Cup may be over in terms of reaching the semi-finals, but the team remains focused on their next matches and aims to finish strong.
