Tesla has decided to discontinue its Solar Roof line, effectively ending a project that faced numerous challenges, customer issues, and missed deadlines. According to reports, the company has informed its network of certified installers that it will stop supplying these integrated solar tiles and will instead concentrate on traditional solar panels for residential use.

For those unfamiliar, the Tesla Solar Roof was designed to resemble stylish tiles, while functioning as a mini power plant. However, the company’s leadership ultimately determined that the product was no longer a sound financial investment. Evidence of this shift can already be seen on Tesla’s website. The dedicated Solar Roof page now redirects visitors to the page for standard solar panels, and references to the Solar Roof have been removed, leaving only options for solar panels, Powerwall, and Megapack.

This marks the end of a significant product that was originally central to Tesla’s $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity in 2016. CEO Elon Musk first introduced the Solar Roof during a demonstration featuring homes from the set of Desperate Housewives, just weeks before shareholders voted on the acquisition. Although this event helped in securing investor confidence, it later came to light that the tiles used in the demo were non-functional prototypes.

From the outset, the Solar Roof faced difficulties in fulfilling Musk’s ambitious promises, as it struggled with the practical challenges of roofing and the complexities of supply chains. Initially, marketing claimed that the Solar Roof could be cheaper than a traditional roof combined with standard solar panels. However, due to complicated installations and rising labor costs, prices soared beyond expectations.

In 2021, a series of retroactive price hikes caused frustration among customers, leading to a class-action lawsuit that Tesla eventually settled for $6 million, as some customers faced sudden increases in their contracts.

Production numbers for the Solar Roof also fell short of expectations. Musk had predicted that by 2020, Tesla would produce and install 1,000 roofs weekly. In reality, the average peaked at just 30 installations a week. Industry estimates indicated that around 3,000 units were deployed nationally over seven years—far below Musk’s original target.

With production goals no longer being reported, Tesla’s transition back to traditional solar panels and residential battery storage is now complete. Some experts believe that if even one of the world’s leading companies cannot make the solar roof concept work, it raises questions about the feasibility of the solar roofing market as a whole.
