Conquering Stairs Cuts Cardiovascular Death Risk by 39%

A new study has revealed that a simple activity could significantly reduce the risk of early death, especially from heart disease, without the need for a gym membership. Researchers at the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital found that individuals who regularly climbed stairs had a 39% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a 24% lower risk of dying from any cause compared to those who didn’t.

Their analysis included data from nearly 1,900 studies, focusing on more than 480,000 participants aged 35 to 84, with a median follow-up period of 14 years. The results suggested that stair climbing could protect against severe cardiovascular conditions like heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.

According to Vassilios Vassiliou from UEA’s Norwich Medical School, the increase in cardiovascular disease cases globally has been alarming, with nearly double the number of cases recorded between 1990 and 2019.

While the study highlighted a connection between climbing stairs and reduced mortality, it did not definitively prove that this activity alone causes longer life. Stair climbing is an excellent form of exercise, as it effectively works various muscle groups and provides cardiovascular benefits while being low impact.

One significant finding from the study was that climbing around six flights of stairs daily may yield the most advantages, though more research is needed to ascertain the best amount for health benefits. Sophie Paddock, also from UEA’s Norwich Medical School, pointed out that even small steps toward incorporating more stair climbing into daily life could lead to meaningful health improvements.

Alarmingly, over a quarter of adults around the globe don’t meet recommended activity levels, and lifestyle factors such as inactivity, smoking, poor diet, and obesity greatly contribute to heart disease.

Stair climbing is a free and accessible way to fit exercise into daily routines, whether at home, work, or in public places, making it particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules. Even brief periods of physical activity can have positive health effects, and short stair climbs can easily become part of everyday life.

However, it is important to note that stair climbing may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with mobility challenges or joint issues. The findings were published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, emphasizing the potential of this simple habit in promoting better heart health.
