Xavi Hernandez Joins Netherlands as New Head Coach
Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez has been named the new head coach of the Netherlands national football team. This decision comes after the Dutch team faced an early exit in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where they were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Morocco.
The Dutch football federation is taking a bold step by shifting its approach to the game. Under Xavi, they plan to focus on a more possession-driven and attacking style, moving away from former coach Ronald Koeman’s defensive strategy.
Xavi, who is 46 years old, takes over from Koeman, who stepped down following the disappointment in the World Cup. This marks the first time Xavi will manage a national team, having previously led Barcelona until 2024. His contract will run through the 2030 World Cup.
His first challenge will be against Germany in the Nations League on September 24.
A Significant Change for the Dutch Team
Xavi’s appointment signifies a notable shift for the Netherlands, as they have typically chosen coaches from within their own ranks. With this change, Xavi becomes the first foreign head coach since Ernst Happel from Austria led the team during the 1978 World Cup.
Xavi’s Coaching Philosophy
Xavi brings with him a coaching style rooted in the positional play he mastered during his iconic playing career at Barcelona. Known as one of the best midfielders of all time, Xavi was central to Barcelona and Spain’s emphasis on possession-based football. He joined Barcelona’s academy at just 11 years old and went on to make 767 appearances for the senior team, winning an impressive 25 major titles, including eight La Liga championships and four Champions League trophies.
Xavi’s impact extended to the Spanish national team, where he earned 133 caps and played a key role in Spain’s remarkable success, contributing to their Euro 2008 win, the 2010 World Cup victory, and Euro 2012 triumph, earning accolades like Player of the Tournament.
Xavi’s Management Journey
After retiring in Qatar, Xavi began his coaching career with Al-Sadd in 2019. There, he quickly earned a reputation for playing an attacking brand of football. In just two years, he led Al-Sadd to seven trophies, including an unbeaten league title in the 2020-21 season. His teams displayed a strong focus on positional play and counter-pressing.
He returned to Barcelona in 2021, stepping into a challenging situation due to the club’s financial struggles. Xavi successfully restored Barcelona to prominence, clinching the La Liga title and Supercopa de España, while giving opportunities to young talents such as Pedri and Gavi.
Xavi left Barcelona in 2024 and has been away from coaching since then. Now, with the Netherlands, he aims to bring his vision and experience to a new challenge.
